NEW FRANKFORD TRANSPORTATION CENTER AND RENOVATION OF HISTORIC BRIDGE STREET TERMINAL BUILDING
SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY, PHILADELPHIA, PA
Design of the Electrical, HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems for the New Frankford Transportation Center. Located at the end of the Elevated Rail line in Philadelphia, the Frankford Transportation Center is a transportation hub which links rail, bus and trolley systems. The project included the design of a new Main Terminal Station, renovation of the Existing Historic Bridge Street Terminal Building, a new 1000 car Parking Garage, and modifications to the existing Bus Terminal Depot Building. Six project phases were designed, bid and completed over 11 years.
FTC-4 MAIN TERMINAL BUILDING:
- MECHANICAL SYSTEMS: Complete HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems, ATC controls for all the buildings and CO and NOx for the Bus Terminal Depot Building. While using chillers, piping and ducts for a traditional air delivery system for portions of the station, we designed SEPTA’s first radiant floor system for a transportation facility. This Green Building design concept delivers a higher comfort level in the high-ceiling spaces, while reducing the energy costs relative to a traditional air handler system. A chiller transmission line was installed between the MTB and the historic train station.
- ELECTRICAL: Design of a complete electrical system, including emergency power distribution, primary voltage cables and distribution, communication systems, remote controls for the new elevators. New true-online UPS system backed-up by an emergency generator provides continuous power to critical communications facilities and the main train control room. Single mode fiber optic cabling and 15kV medium voltage cables were routed through 0.5 miles of underground ductbank to an existing substation to provide power for the train control facility. New dual 15kV PECO services were provided to the Main Terminal building for additional redundancy.
- FIRE PROTECTION: Fully sprinklered facilities in compliance with NFPA 13, including FM-200 dry chemical systems in critical rooms: Train Control Room, Main Communications Rooms and Electrical Rooms.
